Humanity's future is riding on a single test . . .

The Earth is dying. Sterile deserts smother its continents. Acidic waters foul its oceans. One species still clings to life on its blighted surface.

But for millions of humans, death is only one test away.

Daoren and Heqet have good reason to worry. Like every 19-year-old in their city-state, they must soon sit the Survival Aptitude Test. Only the smartest will pass the S.A.T. and earn the right to live.

The rest are harvested for food.

That's the harsh reality, 700 years after mass extinctions have erased every other life form. Fortunately, there's a seed of hope for the ever-shrinking human population.

If Daoren can overcome his crippling anxiety, he might achieve the first perfect test score and be proclaimed ruler. Heqet knows he can’t do it without her—even if he’d be the last person to ask for help. Together, they may hold the answers for saving their species.

But will they live long enough to tell anyone?

When personal tragedy reveals a horrifying secret about the S.A.T., Daoren and Heqet are plunged into a perilous struggle for survival. With a corrupt government and a murderous planet bent on killing them, even a single misstep could spell their doom.

And their doom could spell the end of humanity.

Survival Aptitude Test Sound The Extinction Odyssey Book 1 eBook Mike Sheriff

I debated between three and four stars, but decided 4 is just too much.

I liked a lot about this book. The world could have been better developed, but eventually it mostly made sense. The characters did not make a lot of sense. (The best developed character is the evil leader...) Some characters are named, but nothing is done with them for a while. However, the book is an enjoyable read, and I kept wondering what would happen next.

And then there is the end. Or rather, what passes for the end, as the "end" is a cliffhanger for book 2. (Although reading the description of book 2 does answer one of the things that was left open.) I was afraid that was how the book would end, as I noticed as I got near the end that a lot still had to be resolved. I understand the idea of encouraging people to buy your next book, but the best way to do that is write a really great book that makes people want to read more - not write part of a story and make people buy the next book to see what happens.

Survival Aptitude Test Sound The Extinction Odyssey Book 1 eBook Mike Sheriff Reviews

Well, the wording is overflowery. The author is not Hemingway, that's for sure. And the characters strangely devoid of emotions. For one, I do not know what I do if my child was "culled" as a result of some test, but the characters in the book basically accept it. Thus said, the premise is interesting and I rather enjoyed it. Not as works of some authors who think that adjective for "empire" is "empirical" (there is one, at least). Let us see where it will get us. Four stars are given are "on loan" here, but hoping, justified because of further work.
This was a really well written book. The concept was really strong, and had the possibility of getting hokey very easily, but it was really well developed. The characters and world were really immersive, and I enjoyed the original curses and words. The strongest point I think was the flow, it never felt like the author was writing just to write, and it moved at a solid pace.

TL;DR Great original concept, which does not get stale. Awesome flow with well developed characters and a satisfying ending that make you want to keep going.
This author presents a different view of "cannibalism" but well-understood corruption and greed as well as the necessary rebels to right the wrongs of the dying society. His overuse of a few uncommon words detracted from the flow of the story. His writing overall was quite good. The characters and their plots were believable. I am planning to read the next book next.
Holy crap. Just found an author that I will be reading everything they have written. I may have to officially become his stalker.... LOVED the book!!!! Really makes you think. No word fluff, tight and precise writting, characters to root for, and made me feel that "out of the first page" gate I got sucked in; could not put this down and read in 4 hours...
I have had the pleasure of reading many post-apocalyptic novels, some for work, but most for enjoyment. Generally, very good science fiction asks the questions that we really don't want to ask, and the logical conclusion is borne out through the novel. The question here is, what would happen if the only known surviving species was humanity? How would they face this? What would corruption look like when the only food source is yourself? Enter the harrowing storyline of harvesting children through a process of testing through the Survival Aptitude Test. Supposedly, only the best and brightest are allowed to live past their testing, but when a young man is harvested with a score that is suspected fake, his brother must make decisions about what can be done, before his own harvesting becomes a reality. How could someone have done this? And how can one survive their own Testing?
I'm always in the mood for dystopian/sci-fi stories and I enjoyed this one--who doesn't like the intrigue of a culture that must eat themselves! However, I could NOT abide the intense over-usage of the words 'rasplaughter', 'gigglesnicking', and 'chucklebuck'. I wanted to throw my kindle across the room before I was 2/3rd's finished with the book. Its ok to just say someone giggled or laughed once in a while. To be honest, it ruined the story for me...and took the focus off of the interesting points as I cringed through another (unfunny) chucklebucking scene.
A super story. Great writing. Good characters, though not really easy to sympathize with the protagonist, since there don't seem to be many points of empathy between us and him. Maybe I missed them? Aside from "us vs. them" and the big conspiracy. In that regard we all want to root for the underdog.

There is a cliff-hanger ending, that is fortunately tidied up a bit in the preview of the next book. Unfortunately, the next book is a bit of a hassle to obtain, but since I'm fine with putting my own .mobi files on my own with no hand-holding, I was able to download the next book without installing an app on my phone. YMMV. Oh, and I haven't been spammed by the author or his BookFunnel service either. )
